Antimalarial herbal drugs: a review of their interactions with conventional antimalarial drugs

Abstract Development of resistance by malaria parasites to conventional antimalarial drugs has rejuvenated the exploration herbal medicine as alternatives. Also, increasing rate use remedies in combination with (both synthetic and semi-synthetic) inspired researchers validate their herb-drug interaction effects. This review evaluated outcomes between drugs. With aid electronic databases, Pubmed Google scholar, articles related this subject were sourced from English peer reviewed scientific journals published 2003 2020. Search terms used include “antimalarial-herbal interaction”, “antimalarial medicinal plant interactions drugs”, “drug-herbal interactions, plants”. Synergistic, antagonistic none effects reported among 30 studies reviewed. Among 18 vivo on P. berghei yoelii nigerense infected mice model , 14 showed synergism, 3 antagonism 1 involving three plants both 9 in-vivo normal animal (non-infected), 2 antagonism, synergism 5 none-effects. Two (2) human volunteers one (1) vitro quantitative study that Garcinia kola reduced plasma concentrations quinine halofantrine. Generally, majority synergistic CAMDs. Vernonia amygdalina was most studied compared others. Consequently, produced may be prospects for standardization development antimalarial-medicinal therapy could curtail therapies.
